Another Class of "55" passes

We are sorry to announce the passing of another member of the "Class of 55". We received word today, January 18th 2010 of the passing of Lila LaBreck Scott. Lila died in the Hospital in Aberdeen early Sunday morning 1-17-10. As of this date, the tentative day for her memorial is this coming Saturday, January 23rd. No place or time has been scheduled at posting time. There are plans for a gathering at the Odd Fellows Hall in Montesano,following the memorial.

New information will be posted when word is received.

UPDATE, January 19, 2010...

Only a very short Obit in the Daily World today regarding Lila. As follows: Lila died in Aberdeen Community Hospital 2:00 a.m. on the 17th. (first report was in Olympia hospital) No details available at press time. More to come as further developments are received.

Some have asked for an address to send cards. Lila's brother Joe lives in Aberdeen. If you need his address, please contact charbett@comcast.net

Article in the Daily World: Visitation for Montesano resident Lila L. Scott, who died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, in Aberdeen, will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday at Wynooche Cemetery in Montesano.

First Grade, Montesano Grade School 1941-42

First Grade, Montesano Grade School, Mrs. Dombroski, teacher. This class with the combination of one other 1st Grade class went on to be the Graduating Class of 1955.

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1909. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1909 :

The average life expectancy was 47 years.
Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles
of paved roads..
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour.
The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .
Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
