1909 Facts sent in by Karen Jackson

1909 Ford Model R

Show this to your children, grandchildren and friends
THE YEAR 1909
This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1909. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1909 :
************ ********* *********
The average life expectancy was 47 years.
Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles
of paved roads..
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour.
The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .
Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
entering into their country for any reason.
Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write
(Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A.!
Plus one more sad thought; 95 percent of the taxes we have now did not exist in 1909
I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD - all in a matter of seconds!
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
IT STAGGERS THE MIND
See you all in the Summer of 2010 for the 55th Class get-together!

A car from our era...1955

1956 Ford Skyliner (Glasstop) We restored this car in 1988 from an original car that came from the Indian reservation here on Vancouver Island. It is full power with all options.
1956 Meteor Crown Victoria We restored this car in 1990 and drove it to Ocean Shores Washington for its first drive. It is full power with all accessories except "air".

Robert Buchholz, (Louise Fox Buchholz husband) sent in some photos of some beautifully restored cars of our era. Here is a beauty...a 1955 Merc Sun Valley with full "skylight" and that long Conteniental Kit chrome wrapped spare tire...oh those were the days!

Class of "55" member mentioned in Vidette

In the "Flashback" section of the local paper "The Vidette"...a Class of "55" member is mentioned in the Pages of the Past...

50 years ago...Sept. 17, 1959...

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sandberg took their daughter, Winifred, to Tacoma on Sunday to take the train for New York on the first step of her journey to Nepal, where she will serve three years as a medical missionary at Kathmandu, in charge of the laboratory at the United Mission Hospital, which is in an old palace. From New York, Winifred will go by ship to Bombay, then by train to northern India, and probably fly on to Kathmandu.

Evelyn Plans an informal Class Get-together

Evelyn Vincent Dailey has offered to plan an Informal Class Get-together in August. This event will be strictly informal and will be held in Monte sometime in August. She is planning a restaurant with a buffet so that those attending may choose a menu of their choice.

Start thinking about a day in August that you think would work for all those in the area to get together and visit, eat and visit...Let Evelyn know if you have any suggestions for the get-together.

Contact Evelyn @... edailey@toledotel.com and give her your support for the informal and unofficial Class get-together in August!

This unofficial Class gathering is not to be confused with a Class Reunion. Come if you can and enjoy the day!

Some Old Folks Jokes...Who Sent these in????

Garage Door
Garage DoorThe boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down and his fly area wide open. His assistant walked up to him and said, 'This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?' The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question. As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistant's question about his 'garage door.'He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused by her desk to ask, 'When my garage door was open, did you see my Hummer parked in there?'She smiled and said, 'No, I didn't. All I saw was an old minivan with two flat tires.'

What goes around, comes around
Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says: 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?' Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.' 'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?' 'Yep.. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'

What ever it takes
A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy: 'So I hear you're getting married?' 'Yep!' 'Do I know her?' 'Nope!' 'This woman, is she good looking?' 'Not really.' 'Is she a good cook?' 'Naw, she can't cook too well.' 'Does she have lots of money?' 'Nope! Poor as a church mouse.' 'Well, then, is she good in bed?' 'I don't know.' 'Why in the world do you want to marry her then?' 'Because she can still drive!'

Huh...whad'ya say?
Three old guys are out walking. First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?' Second one says, 'No, it's Thursday!' Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer.'

Those darn hearing aids!
Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?' Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'' The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be careful.'

Banana Split
One more. . .! A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool.. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?' 'No,' he replied, 'Arthritis.'

Thanks,
Emily Lukin

Thanks for keeping us aware of the happenings of our classmates. I do appreciate it very much.
Hope everything is going well with everyone...I am busy, as we all are. I became a Guardian ad Litem 2 years ago...not easy, but that is where God wants me at this time. I am also a Ham radio operator and serving in Emergency Radio Services in Centralia. Taking a CERT class also.....I'm trying to keep ahead of old age...I'll let you know if it works. At least I don't have much time to get into mischief.
"It would be nice if some of us could get together sometime for coffee or lunch....before we all dwindle away."
Thanks again....
Evelyn Daily

(editors note:) Evelyn has a good idea of getting together for coffee or lunch...before more are gone...we should give this some thought and come up with a plan...What do you think?

I guess we are entering an area that I have not wanted to deal with. It is such a sad thing to lose people. It makes me nervous to think that some day my time will come. Don't think I will deal with it very well. Best wishes to all,
Les Shorey

**********
(phone conversation) I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Eli, it is so sad that he lost his wife just a few days before his passing. I think this is a time of life where we really do begin to think of it more.
Lila Scott

(phone conversation) I just wanted to let you know that Eli Prkut passed away early this morning at Veterans Hospital in Seattle. Eli had a massive stroke and died just a few days later. I just talked to his brother Ed on the phone and he said that his wife Marie had just died suddenly a few days ago. I'm not sure of any more details but will let you know if I hear more.
Tom Gruhn

**********
It is sad to hear of another classmate passing. Doubly sad in the fact that Eli had just lost his wife Marie a few days earlier. We will pass on the classes condolences to his family and to his brother Ed Prkut and their families.
Charlie Crass

**********
As a class member of the Montesano High School Class of "55", I send my sympathy to Eli's family and to his brother Ed and his family. Eli will be missed and appreciated. I will always remember going through school with Eli and getting to know him. Best regards to all.

Responses after Max Lukin's obit

Thanks for sharing the news. I was so glad to read that Lila included the class on the card.
Emili and I had a brief, but meaningful, exchange after our supper meeting. She expressed her deep faith in God and how she had no idea how non-believers could exist without the help of God. I know that now she is living out her faith that she expressed to me.
Stay in touch,
Len Salvig

I talked to Paul Willis. Fred passed away in October 2008, but is buried here in Montesano. Paul didn't put anything in the paper, because Fred had not been around here for a long time, thinks maybe he should have though.
I am working on Burt Smith. Pam Valentine has the same email address we do, so will have to try Darlene. He lives in the same place and is alive! Yeh!

Another Class Member Passes

Thanks to Lila Scott for receiving the latest information on Fred Willis.

Fred Willis

Fred's brother, Paul Willis reports that Fred passed away in October of 2008 in Ridgecrest, California. Fred's ashes were buried in the family plot on October 3rd, 2008, in the Wynooche Cemetery here in Montesano. Fred was 73 at the time of his passing.

Paul apologized for not announcing it in the local paper at the time and said he didn't realize there would be any around that would have remembered his brother.

The Class of "55" recognizes Fred as a memorable member of the Class and extends a belated condolence to the family.

Monte High Class of "55" 20th Year Class Reunion

The 20th Class Reunion of the "Class of 55" was a bit more "laid-back"
We were a little wiser, raising families and right in the middle of the
wild "70's...

48 classmembers made up the class of "55" a typical class size of that era.

Montesano High School era 1913 - 1997

The Montesano High School was a long-time landmark in the city of Montesano. The building was erected in 1913 and served the community until 1997. In the early years, the front of the building was home to beautiful ivy that changed to fall colors of red's to maroon. It was fitting, since the School Colors were maroon and grey. The building was demolished in 1997 to make way for the new High School that is located on the site of the former Wheeler Field. The building pictured above, was home to the Class of "55" from kindergarten to graduation.
